I'm starting to wonder how much of this type of shit is actually the people's fault. I've never seen as open robbery as the kind that goes on in America.

Maybe flat fee may not be the way to go because flat fee is pocket change to the rich and not paying the rent, utilizes or go hungry for the poor. Maybe percentage base on income or community service maybe a better way to go....just saying.

Maybe just wear a seatbelt, park where it's legal, etc.

Fines are NOT revenue!

We need an amendment outlawing (govt ans private) profiteering off fines.

Make them send those fines to a fund that funds nonprofit foundations or something.

Man that funny! I had a $45 ticket which i didn't pay for 2 years o.k. Palm Beach County. I called them to see how much I owed them. I paid them $125 for the ticket and late fees. They returned the late fee to me.

This video is actually a very strong argument in favor of the Libertarian party, which seeks to eliminate all "crimes" that have no victims.

What's worse is here in some cities in Alabama the jails actually charge you per day for being in jail, so your fees add up more every time you are in jail. So, they arrest you for not paying a ticket on time and every day you are in jail is an additional 25 a day, plus court costs are about $100 each time you see a judge, plus JCS fees.

I had my license suspended for 5 years in Florida due to fines.

"Speeding ( less then 25MPH over the posted speeld limit) 255,50$"

And this corruption of the legal system is the reason why liberals in the US want to get rid of the driver licences completely.

For all other systems in the world that would be a horrible and insane idea, but for the US this would be an improvement especially for the poor people.

In Sweden there is a system called "day fines" (dagsböter). You are given a certain number of day fines as punishment. The fine is based on your income. The larger your income the higher the fine.

I once had to spend 300 in North Carolina and go to court for being 10 over in a stretch of highway where the speed limit decreased for only 1 mile - hence why I did not notice it in the first place.

Well, that is something that most games, computer or even table top games, need to balance it out. When there is a huge variation in stats among players and/or participants, bonuses and penalties are usually set to be percentages instead of hard numbers.

Because, when each participant will have a difference in stats, a hard number can be either too high or not even noticeable. Take the example of the classic DxD and Monopoly game or Paradox's games. All those games have different resources which the quantity can vary wildly.

To make it even more relatable, lets use gold penalties and bonuses of events as a comparison. Adding +5 gold or taking -5 gold isn't very balanced in a long run.

The reason being that a player with 1000 gold and a good income won't even feel the difference. On the other hand, a player struggling or still at the early game will totally notice it. It's only really relevant to certain cases and players while irrelevant to others.

That is why lots of bonuses are calculated on percentages. That allows it to remain relevant during the whole game while still balanced. It makes it so that every participant, at any given time, will actually care about their decisions.

I'm glad someone took the time out to speak on this issue, I live in NYC and I've always said that I refuse to own a car here because the city government basically sees drivers as a source of income... literally every single driver I know has gotten a ticket at some point, often over the dumbest things. Cops actually have quotas for how many tickets they need to write per month (I'm very surprised that John Oliver didn't mention that, because I've heard cops in other parts of the country do it too). I am shocked to hear how bad it is in other states though.... absolutely barbaric how we treat poor people in America.

While I agree with many of the views of this show, in this case YOU ARE COMPLETELY IN THE WRONG Oliver. You are not a business owner nor a municipality, you have no fucking idea what you're talking about. You assume no cost associated with time lost by dealing with this or with payment delays of 3-12 months. Do you know how many small businesses went out of business because of the 90-day invoice delays that are common in most industries? Local municipalities have it even worse, they are no different than a guy living paycheck to paycheck, with the exception that this "paycheck" may be delayed by months or years. The very same late payment fines that screw over this small percentage of people discourage a much larger percentage from abusing the system. And sure, spending thousands of dollars on jailing a person over $2 beer can seems dumb, until the viewer realizes that what you picked up here is a worst-case scenario anecdote that's not at all representative of the system as a whole. Do you want your roads paved? Do you want them free of snow? Do you want a functional police and fire department in your area? Would you be ok if the city told you they have to shut down the fire station for a week (putting everyone in the city at risk) because the funds to operate it were used up paying the towing guy for some moron who didn't read a sign and now can't afford his towing fee? These very same people you're defending ultimately cost everyone else much more. And yes, the situation sucks, but the alternative of fucking everyone else up the ass because Bob is irresponsible is even worse. Bob is negligent, Bob should pay, not Mary. I deal first hand with this on a daily basis, I'm a landlord, do you know how much it sucks to have to explain to one tenant that I don't have the funds to paint the walls in common area because another tenant is 2 months late on their rent? Eventually it comes down to eviction, which itself is an expensive process. Isn't it fair that the people causing these unforeseen expenditures chip in to cover these costs via fines? Moreover, it's not a one-time occurrence like this episode makes it seem, it's the same people who run into these problems over and over, I have great tenants and ones who over time leech me of thousands of dollars with these tiny misdemeanors, only to start complaining when I shift these fees to them.

i got a ticket for blocking an intersection because the traffic I was following in the left lane stopped suddenly and it made us all slam on our brakes and then picked up a second later. Turns out all the cars in front of me saw 2 cop cars on the side of the road as they were turning left so they all slammed their brakes to slow down and that made me and 2 other cars block the intersection for a moment. The ticket was for 140 dollars and I couldnt pay it. The ticket happened in the month I needed to renew my registration so I couldnt renew it. But I had to keep going to work and taking my kids to school. I got stopped for expired registration 2 months later. Got a second ticket. And couldn't pay that one either. That was back in 2013. I was finally able to pay all of the fees and shit back in February of this year. i finally have an up to date registration and a legal license again. I spent 4 years of my life paranoid every time I drove.

"The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.”

Absolutely agree that a 10 fold increase in fees and other fines (or even PRISON ... god ...) is CRAZY but I'm impressed with the price of gas that 41$ is that hard to pay quickly enough

I ran through a stop sign on a moped I was trying to restore on my first test ride, found the brakes didn't work, tried to stop but couldn't, cop gave me a ticket for $238, the moped is worth $200, I also only make $25 per week.
