Executing criminals doesn't have to cost so much. A .45 caliber bullet to the head would do the same as a 308 Million dollar execution, but we could save that 308 Million and put it towards funding schools so we aren't like 40th in world education. I say if there is absolute proof someone committed a horrible crime such as murder, rape, brutal assault, torture, kidnapping, etc., fuck them. Put them down. They made their choice, we shouldn't have to pay to keep them alive and healthy when that money could go to so many other things.

Murder,Rape,Children molesters should be punished by death penalty.Hanging,Beheading and done only with 100% proven guild. And srsly $308 millions per execution? what the fuck are you executing people with?
Thomas Hall
because the only way to let people know that killing is bad... is to kill people?

Idk where John Oliver gets his numbers but hes lying to you all. For a trial that seeks the death penalty, around 1.2 million dollars will be spent. Not a small amount, but definitely not 84 million. The average cost to taxpayers per prisoner is $90,000 a year so after like 20 years of a life sentence they've already spent over the 1.2 million. Kill the criminals, feed the poor. It's really that simple.
Brock D
John Oliver conveniently leaves out that these criminals are still a danger especially to the guards. Dozens of prison guards are killed every year by criminals many of whom have life sentences and nothing to lose. It's also expensive to keep these criminals alive; think about it like this, the government spends more money keeping criminals alive than keep the poor alive.

Personally I support the death penalty. But I can have a discussion with somebody else.

how the fuck executions cost that much?
Michael Helpingstine
So excuse my ignorance but how is the death penalty so much more expensive than life sentencing?
Lemonz1989
To those don't know what the $308 million go to. You have to run special areas to house them in, guards for those areas, doctors, suicide watch, the cost of keeping them there for years, legal costs in the US are extremely high (especially for cases that go on for years), as well as no pharmaceutical company wanting to have their expensively developed and helpful drugs associated with death. One dose of chemicals for the execution literally costs millions, because the US government has to do extreme back and forth manipulation of the buying process to hide where the drugs go to and what they're used for.
The Danish pharmaceutical company Lundbeck (specialized in neurological and mental illnesses) stopped selling one of their drugs to the US government altogether, because they didn't want one of their sedatives (and the company in general) associated with killing people. It's hurts profits.
The doctors cost a fortune, because the idea of killing people against their will isn't all that appealing to most doctors as well. And probably many other costs I don't know about.

Okay but I have a real question... how does killing someone cost so much? Seriously?

In theory, I'm a proponent of the death penalty, despite mostly agreeing with Liberal perspectives. If it could be reasonably cheap (how much is a bullet?) and only enacted upon those who have certainly, or as certainly as possible, committed the most heinous crimes, I'm all for not funding the continued existence of monsters. Even if it isn't a suitable deterrent, at least it removes the threat and burden these people pose from society.

Realistically, of course, the death penalty is obscenely expensive, and would probably just kill a bunch of innocent minorities, but in theory, a lot of people shouldn't be alive to harm or burden society.
Mrs Unknown
Honestly, I don't have problems talking about the death penalty and death in general. They just need to be addressed.
totally not jeff

wouldn't be so expensive if we just hanged them publicly... be a good deterrent too

Can you do a update on this piece about capital punishment, but focus on how fucked up the death penalty is in Florida? Specifically about how it was declared unconstitutional and how they tried to fix it.

One of the men that created the innocence project was one of O.J. Simpson's lawyers on the "dream team".

Japan has death penalty implemented but it doesn't execute any of the criminals who were sentenced to death. So basically, in Japan, if you're sentenced to a death penalty, it's just life in prison with the freedom to eat any kind and amount of meal you want, with no labor work to do and the freedom of using the internet to write blogs. I see the death penalty as being very useful for one thing. Plea Bargins. There have been countless cases where prosecutors were able to use the death penalty as a bargaining chip to get murderers to disclose valuable information regarding their victims. It has led to serial killers telling the police the location of bodies and other victims which has helped provide closure to families. I never hear this aspect brought up by anyone claiming that the death penalty has no use whatsoever... I suppose it is an inconvenient fact.

death penalty should remain, why keep spending on feeding a prisoner that is past rehabilitation like a mass shooter or serial killer

I could possibly be on board with getting rid of the death penalty, but we would have to completely overhaul our prison system. As it is it's very soft and does little in the way of actually trying to reform criminals. I worked in one (in Texas). I've been in high schools that didn't baby students the way inmates are coddled....
Payal Bhosale
So I suppose tomorrow one of the main terrorist masterminds is captured which is plausible, what kind of punishment would be appropriate for him if not death penalty? Let's not forget keeping them in prison is going to cost a lot of money. I think, this is why death penalty cannot be completely done away with
DrakeMarvell
I'm not entirely for the death penalty, especially since some of those executed could have been innocent, but you know why it costs so much for the death penalty? They've come up with many other ways of executing someone, such as lethal injections & the electric chair, when a handful of bullets, a blindfold & handcuffs would do the trick for far less.
