At 8:26, you should first thread a single nut down past the point where the cut will be made because the cut usually leaves damaged threads that make it difficult to thread a nut onto the fastener. Once the cut has been made, unscrew the single nut and the threads will be straight. A little cleanup with a file may be necessary.

I having been using a lot if these ideas for quite some time. The match stick trick is good but a tooth pick is made of hard wood and will work better.
