The NCAA doesn’t pay athletes because they consider them amateurs. The NCAA considers them amateurs because they don’t get paid.

The problem with this is that only a hand full of schools make enough money pay the student athletes. If your school is getting a ton of TV time they are getting paid. Most schools do not get that much TV time. And what about the other sports that do not make money? Are we going to pay the swimmers, gymnast, golfers. tennis players or the sailing team. Looking just at football, if the schools where required to pay the players most schools would have to end there programs. The only teams left would be the one in the SEC, ACC, Big 10 and the PAC12. The CUSA, SUNBELT, Mountain West, the MID-American and every team in the FCS would no longer be able to keep their programs. Many teams in these conferences struggle as it is to keep the programs going. And if you do not believe that just look at UABs football program.

lol two years later and the first thing that pops up after googling "salary for ncaa student athletes" is http://www.ncaa.org/amateurism

17:27 has he never heard of work-study? Every single college and university in America employs students.

Student athletes should NOT be paid a regular salary. BUT only because I believe this will draw even more undue pressure to perform; which will impede academic performance and cause student athletes to drop out of college. Division I college athletes should be guaranteed full tuition, room and board, and a monthly stipend by the NCAA for 5 years of study and 2 summers as long as they are academically eligible. Their scholarships should be guaranteed if they can no longer compete because of an injury and their medical expenses should be covered as well for any injuries sustained during play or practice. Student athletes should be able to have endorsement deals and to be able to license their image as well. The NCAA needs to make these changes. They will still make obscene amounts of money and so will the coaches.

I'm a college student, and even at a college where no one cares about the athletics department, it's still somewhat of a past time for students to complain about athlete scholarships. I'm smart, the idea goes, why should this person who may or may not be get to go to college for free? But the truth is, student athletes are victims in the for-profit college machine that churns out an entire national generation of broke, struggling young people on a footing below where our fathers were. I love my time at college, I learned so much and regret nothing, but the fact of the matter is that as long as it's for profit and human greed isn't checked, it'll continue to screw every college student over. Student athletes are even more so -- even at our school, UNC Asheville, a small liberal arts college where they have to beg people to go to some of the games, student athletes are exhausted, overworked, and often struggling broke even more than the rest of us? And the sports department? Still the biggest moneymaker our college has. and for what do student athletes get? They don't have to go into crippling debt, or rely on their families to give up what little they have. They don't have to start their adult lives 30 thousand dollars behind, getting paid the same starvage wages as everyone else?

First of all: I get that they don't want them to make millions and be even more commercialized than their league already is. But why the actual fuck don't they just pay each college athlete the same nominal amount. I'm not talking about millions of dollars. All I'm talking about is a nominal amount of, let's say 2000$ a month so that they don't have to worry about making their living and so that the ones that come from a less wealthy family background can support their family a bit. Come on guys!

College is ABSOLUTELY about preparing you to get a job and to be paid. Giving them money before they go out into the real world wouldn't be antithetical to anything but screwing them over. When you're holding them in a vice grip and telling them they can only keep their scholarship so long as they're useful to you, the least you can fucking do is hand them a pay check so their life isn't ruined after an injury you put them through.
Le Touriste
What about a price reward? Like giving a huge amount of money for the few tops teams? The tournament would still be amateur no?given this is not a salary or a constant entry of money,a final price would be totally accurate with the spirit of a competition and the tradition;)

Yeah when national pride was at steak when Olympic basketball was getting killed in the Olympics by other countries , then all of a sudden pro-athletes were included in the next Olympics. If colleges were shamed into paying these athletes at least a living wage while paying coaches millions of dollars they would do it. Only one percent of college athletes get into the pros. We are selling out these men and women and giving them nothing because they can. These schools are so greedy.

Players should be able to get sponsorships but they should not have a salary from a school just for playing sports
vOriginz Ryan
The NCAA pays for these kids to go to school they get paid through scholarships if they want to pay 30 grand a year to go to school and get paid then fine but if they don't want to pay to go to these D1 colleges then they shouldn't get paid that's why college athletes don't and shouldn't get paid
Landon Letterman
Is it not possible to kick start a designer shoe line, barely distinguishable to the college behind the player, with nothing but their name or initials adorning the shoe, and sell them to anonymously donate the money to the college athletes? Let the checks be personally delivered, with no means of checking it through the college (you're not infringing on there copyright with just a name or a series of letters)

Of course, the college would take exception, but it could be one of the best kept secrets of college basketball.

How are players expected to respect their coach if they know he is getting not only huge amounts of money but also endorsements?

😂 I love how John has such a passionate opinion about ladders! This isn't the first time he slams Werner.

Two steps I would like to see is colleges no longer paying coaches and colleges paying settlements to injured athletes. The coaches have many revenue streams like broadcasting and camps. Also, coaches have a reasonable chance of moving to the pros. Maybe paying all the athletes is too problematic but at least the injured athletes deserve damages.

I would absolutely buy march sadness, n im not even that interested in sports-themed videogames or basketball.
