Activity Within the King Penguin Colony
This video shows the typical behavior within a King penguin colony. From penguins sitting on their eggs, to parents grooming their chick and themselves.
The baby King penguins retain their downy brown feathers for several months which prevents them from entering the water and cleaning off. Their parents will preen their chick's feathers to keep their insulating properties, just as they do to their own feathers when they emerge from the ocean.
Many King penguins in this colony have laid their eggs at this time of the year, and they keep their eggs on their feet, instead of sitting on them in a nest as other types of penguins do.
This video was taken at the Volunteer Point King Penguin colony. Footage compiled in conjunction with work for the NGO, Falklands Conservation. Visit http://www.falklandsconservation.com for more info on current projects in the Falkland Islands.
