The light is an obscure brand Klarmax light. 35cm (14inches) long. It came with a 24W PFL compact florescent light. I changed it to an 18W one. It takes 4 pin compact florescent light, and I couldn’t find a light that was lower than 18W and daylight color, or 6500K.

You can use any kind of florescent or compact florescent. For a 5 gallon tank, 12~14 watt should be plenty. You can go as low as 10W.

The wires and clips and sleeve are picture frame hanging wire and accessories.

This setup is the same as my previous tanks: the 7.5 gallon bowl and the 5 gallon tall.
The only difference is that I will not be starting out with any livestock. Only thing I would like to have done differently is the 18w lamp. I think the wattage is too high. I usually go for 2~3 watts per gallon rule. Hopefully the height adjustment works out.

I’ll be documenting the progress of this tank more in detail until the balance is achieved.

Ep.14 Peppermint Betta Tank (Attack of Cyanobacteria) No filter, No CO2, NO ferts Nano Tank Kartoffel is a wild betta species called Mahachai betta. The lettuce started out strong, then ended up withering away. I can only guess that it’s probably b/c of from lack of nutrients. I added regular duckweed, and it also would not grow. I think adding the pearl grass made other plants not grow very well. It probably sucks up too much nutrients from the tank.

The bumblebee nerite didn’t make it through the cyano phase of this tank. It wasn’t the slime stain remover’s fault. I was going to add another nerite, but I didn’t want it to get harassed by Kartoffel either. The bumblebee rarely came out because of Kartoffel the entire time.

A snail egg must have been in one of the duckweed that I added from Dante’s tank. That same type of snail has spread like wildfire in there. Interestingly, Kartoffel never messes with it.

Peppermint is doing great for now. Only time will tell if they’ll end up like the lettuce.

World's First Closed Terrarium in an Aquarium Yo dawg I herd you like terrariums so we put a terrarium in yo aquarium so you can terrarium while you aquarium. Thanks for introduction Xzibit, now let's make the world's first closed terrarium in an aquarium! Many of you have requested this build and here it finally is. I really hope you enjoy it because I think it's some of my best work yet.

- Information on Sealing the Jar -
In this demonstration, I used a jar that already comes with a gasket and it worked great. However, what if you can't get a hold of this jar or want to use something else? Well if your using a container that is sealed with a cork, you can simply use a “Rubber Stopper.” If you already have container with a lid and it's not leak proof, then you can use the DIY rubber gasket, shown in the video. If none of those options interest you, then you could also make a DIY Oogoo cap. If done properly, I have no doubt that it would work. More information on each item in the links below.

I also recommend that you only use a glass jar. Silicone doesn't readily adhere to plastic, but it sure does work for glass! On that, any sort of 100% silicone (I usually use GE Silicone I) will work fine for this application. Also, you'll do best to stick with a plastic lid, if you're using something ready-made. Metal lids or anything that will contaminate the water column are not advised.

-Plants-
Below is a complete list of the plants used in this video. I know that many of you will ask where I get my plants. Most of the plants used in the terrarium were sourced locally. The aquarium plants on the other hand were purchased at a few local fish stores and given to yours truly by Justin at H2O Plants. I met up with Justin a few months back to build a terrarium. In return he gave me some of the awesome plants in this video, such as the Hygrophila polysperma 'Sunset' (which you most likely won't be able to obtain in the US, given the nature of this plant). Anyways check out the link below to see what plants he has (this isn't a sponsored video and he didn't ask me to plug this). https://www.h2oplants.com/

- What Happened to my Fish? -
So I'll keep this brief, but basically here's what happened with my fish. A few months back when it started getting warmer I had to go on a business trip. Before doing so, I did the usual maintenance on all of my aquariums, but something was off with the ones that require warm water. That said, I also have two cold water setups, which weren't affected by this issue. Anyways, I noticed that water was coming out of tap with a lot of white particles in it or that's what it looked like at least. Unfortunately I couldn't find my test kit and I didn't have time to get one because I was leaving the day after.

I was concerned for my fish, but I let the aquariums alone and hoped that the water just needed to clear up. The next day, which was the day I left, the aquariums looked perfectly clear. So I left for my trip, with some peace of mind. However, upon my return I was greeted by a betta and knife fish that had passed. Those were really the only two sensitive fish that I had and unfortunately they are now lost. It's sad, but it's a reality that comes with these hobbies.

When I returned, I did maintenance again and nothing was wrong with the water this time. So once I got a chance to finally test it, nothing seemed out of the ordinary and I haven't had issues since. I trust my brother did take of the animals well, so I strongly believe that this was due to the water. I don't know if the township did something different with the water because of the weather change or if there was something up with my water heater, etc. If you've had this issue before, leave a comment about it below. I've never seen something like it before in the 11 years I've kept fish and they were seemingly healthy the days before my departure.
25th & 26th Month – (Watermelon & Banana Feeding Frenzy) NO filter, NO CO2, NO Ferts 5 Gallon Nano This is 25th and 26th month update. Loomster is a sparkling gourami. Loomster started to become more confident these days. Sometimes, he even came out to greet me during feeding time. I don’t know why the shrimp gave up on the watermelon. They were very interested in it, then all of sudden, they all left. The banana was the party favorite. I used a well ripened banana. One thing to note is that banana did make the water tiny bit cloudy after they all munched on it. If you’re going to try banana, I would suggest a very thin slice or a very small piece.

8 Months Update - (Too Many Shrimps) NO filter, NO CO2, NO Ferts 5 Gallon Nano Tank This is 8 months update. The fish are called Sparkling or Pygmy gourami.

I contemplated about raising the Amano larvae. I just think it’s way too much trouble. It requires setting up a separate salt water tank, then worrying about feeding, temperature, lighting, salinity, ro/di water, and water changes for 6 weeks or so. I’ve done salt water tanks for two years in the past, so I'm not new to salt water… but if I succeed, I would be left with hundreds of Amanos to deal with. The larvae is a very good protein source for the growing gouramis.

I think there’s been some confusion with the shrimplets. Amanos have never successfully bred in this tank. All of the shrimplets are another shrimp species. The wild kind. They were labeled as feeder shrimp. I think they are closely related to cherry shrimp. Amanos release larvae, not fully grown shrimplets. And the larvae needs salt water to develop into shrimp. The wild kind releases fully grown tiny shrimplets when breeding.

The shrimp population has exploded. All of the little shrimplets are growing up. I think nearly all of the newborns are being eaten by the gouramis.

The gouramis are showing adult traits already. The big ones have become territorial and started to protect small areas of the tank. I think two have become a pair already. If they breed…oh the drama! Catching other gouramis is gonna be crazy. Also, what am I gonna do with a new generation of gouramis!? The original 4 gouramis are doing fine in the other tank. They are very territorial.

The plant growth has accelerated. I think it’s b/c the temperature reached 28°C, or 83°F once in a while in the tank.

Still no filter, no co2, and no ferts.

24th Month – (Carrot Feeding Frenzy) NO filter, NO CO2, NO Ferts 5 Gallon Nano Tank This is 24th month update. Loomster is a sparkling gourami. Loomster continued to hide a lot throughout this month. I noticed he comes out in the morning more often than other times. I usually film in the evening, so it’s harder catch him doing his usual thing. The carrot was boiled for quite a long time to make it very soft. I didn’t know carrots took that long to boil to make it soft.

I’m still in the process of moving. I think my next video will be at least in 3 weeks or so. I really pushed to get this video out. Hope you like it.

I always appreciate the love and support from you all. I didn’t know so many people would show this much love and support for this little channel.
